You can run the system from a browser, and experimental use is free. At the same site, there is a "Semantic Web Presentation" about the need for application semantics that explores some of this in more detail.

How Cheap is MySQL? (by Jeremy Zawodny): "... if you require certain features for your application like XA transactions, materialized views, table partitioning, cluster indexes...there are some very large or unique system that really do require this stuff. In this case, MySQL is just not an option. Unfortunately, for some tasks Oracle is one of the only options, and that is the only reason why they can still charge the prices they do. I'm a huge fan of both MySQL and Oracle having worked with both of them for a while now...they're great. However, I'm a bigger fan of the right tool for the right job."

Intelligent Enterprise Magazine - Data Webhouse - reffered to in 2002 KIMBALL UNIVERSITY DESIGN TIPS (32-41): In the case of admissions tracking, prospective students progress through a standard set of admissions hurdles or milestones. We’re interested in tracking activities around no less than 15 key steps in the process, including 1) receipt of preliminary admissions test scores, 2) information requested (via web or otherwise), 3) information sent, 4) interview conducted, 5) on-site campus visit, 6) application received, 7) transcript received, 8) test scores received, 9) recommendations received, 10) first pass review by admissions, 11) application reviewed for financial aid, 12) final decision from admissions, 13) student accepted, 14) student admitted and 15) student enrolled. At any point in time, managers in the admissions and enrollment departments are interested in how many applicants are at each stage in the pipeline. It’s much like a funnel where many applicants enter the pipeline, but far fewer progress through to the final stage. Managers also want to analyze the applicant pool by a variety of characteristics. In this admissions example, we can be confident that there is a very rich Applicant dimension filled with interesting demographic information.

Chapter 11. Data Access using O/R Mappers: "Spring provides integration with Hibernate, JDO, and iBATIS SQL Maps in terms of resource management, DAO implementation support, and transaction strategies... Some of the the benefits of using Spring to create your O/R mapping applications include: To avoid vendor lock-in, and allow mix-and-match implementation strategies. While Hibernate is powerful, flexible, open source and free, it still uses a proprietary API. Furthermore one could argue that iBatis is a bit lightweight, although it's excellent for use in application that don't require complex O/R mapping strategies. Given the choice, it's usually desirable to implement major application functionality using standard or abstracted APIs, in case you need to switch to another implementation for reasons of functionality, performance, or any other concerns..."
iBATIS 2.0 Released: "I would say that Hibernate ORM is more convenient if you have developed DB schema simultaneously with application, but iBatis works definitely better if a project needs to deal with a bad (not necessary legacy ) DB schema... I am a happy user of iBATIS now. I went from JDBC to JDO to Hibernate to iBATIS and really think iBATIS is the simplest and most effective solution. It certainly lives upto its promise. I really don't see the reason for all the hoopla around ORMs... I found ORM (Hibernate, JDO, EJB) loses transparency and is limitting when you have performance needs or more complex apps, so iBatis like (SQL and relational ) DAO works better... "
